While most Americans would probably agree that drug and alcohol abuse are unhealthy behaviors, they may be surprised to know that substance abuse is one the most common causes of brain injury.  Even short term drug (including nicotine) and alcohol abuse affects blood flow and metobolism, which in turn compromises how well the central nervous system is able to function.  The effects of substance abuse can range from poor memory,  difficulting in auditory processing, and unstable moods.

SPECT can add valuable information to the evaluation and treatment of substance abusers.  Drug and alcohol abuse is often accompanied by a denial that there is a physical problem.  A patient with a history of  abuse may find it difficult to deny their condition when faced with a 3D image of how toxic substances have actually damaged their brain function.  In addition, SPECT can help show over time how abstaining from drugs and alcohol, as well as complying with a treatment plan, can restore healthy function to the brain.  Finally, SPECT images provide a positive educational effect for children and teens in particular, and may help deter their use of drugs and alcohol.
